In Oslo, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 2025 has been announced. Maria Corina Machado has been awarded for her efforts in promoting democratic rights in Venezuela and fighting for a peaceful transition to democracy.
Nobel Week and Its Heroes
This week, laureates in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature have already been announced. The last laureate, in the field of economics, will be named on October 13. The award ceremony will take place on December 10.
Among the contenders for the peace prize was also U.S. President Donald Trump. His candidacy was actively supported, including by families of Israelis held in Gaza.
Trump and His Ambitions
Bloomberg noted that Trump pursued the award with aggressive persistence. His statements at the UN General Assembly sounded like veiled threats. He claimed he deserved the prize but did not expect to receive it.
At a military gathering, Trump stated that a refusal to award him would be “an insult to the country.” In Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada even registered a document in support of his candidacy.
Reaction and Criticism
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Trump could be nominated if he creates conditions for a ceasefire. However, Trump’s candidacy sparked controversy: 76% of Americans believe he does not deserve the award.
The peace prize is often criticized for being politicized. Norwegian researcher Fredrik Heffermehl also expressed doubts about its objectivity.
The Nobel Peace Prize remains a symbol that evokes both admiration and controversy. This year, it once again drew attention to the complex issues facing the global community.
