The UN Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA) yesterday called for a temporary truce to allow residents to leave northern Gaza. Medics in the enclave said they were running out of supplies to treat casualties from the three-week Israeli offensive. This was reported by UNN with reference to Reuters.
The head of the UNRWA aid agency, Philippe Lazzarini, noted that the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with bodies remaining on roadsides or buried under rubble. “In northern Gaza, people are just waiting to die. They feel abandoned, hopeless and alone,” he emphasized.
“I call for an immediate truce, at least for a few hours, to allow safe humanitarian passage for families who wish to leave the area for safer places,” Lazzarini added.
The British prime minister voiced the opinion that the death of the Hamas leader could lead to an end to the fighting in Gaza. “Washington called on Israel to increase the supply of humanitarian aid to northern Gaza. Gaza doctors claim that help has not reached them. On Tuesday, it was said that Israeli troops had killed more than 20 people.
The Israeli military said it was evacuating people along designated routes and separating Hamas militants from civilians. Many Palestinians fear the evacuation could be part of an Israeli plan to create a buffer zone to control Gaza after the end of hostilities.
The Israeli military rejected claims that the evacuation was part of a broader plan and explained that its goal was to separate civilians from Hamas militants. “Hamas will not reveal the name of the new leader until March,” the Israeli military said.
