The world is currently facing serious challenges. In the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan and other parts of the world, brutal wars with unexpected outcomes are underway, making the situation truly threatening. This was stated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, at the annual high-level meeting of 193 UN member states. He noted that impunity, inequality and uncertainty lead the world to a “powder keg” and this path cannot continue. Guterres stressed the need to reform the UN to save the situation.
Guterres described the global situation as untenable and unsustainable, noting that the world is going through an era of epic transformation with unprecedented challenges caused by deep geopolitical divisions and wars in the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan and elsewhere. Guterres warned that no one can predict how all this will end, but reminded that the world is moving towards a powder keg that could engulf it.
The UN Secretary-General expressed concern about the conflict in the Middle East, calling the situation in Gaza a nightmare that could engulf the entire region and noting the intensification of shelling between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah. He also noted that there was no sign of an end to the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 after Russia invaded.
In Sudan, Guterres described the power struggle as brutal, leading to horrific violence, including mass rape. He stressed that humanitarian catastrophes occur where hunger spreads, noting the levels of violence and suffering from Myanmar and Congo to Haiti, Yemen and elsewhere, as well as the growing terrorist threat in the Sahel region.
However, Guterres is confident that the situation is not yet hopeless, and that the problems the world is facing can be solved. He highlighted the importance of the recent Future Summit, where participating countries adopted a “Pact for the Future” to address a wide range of problems. The UN Secretary-General calls for reforming the UN and other international organizations in line with the challenges of the 21st century.
