The United States is calling on Turkey and other allies with ties to Iran to persuade Tehran to reduce tensions in the Middle East and not escalate, US Ambassador to Turkey Jeff Flake said, Reuters reports.
“We are asking all of our allies who have relationships with Iran to encourage them to de-escalate, including Turkey,” Flake told reporters.
He noted that the Ankara government was taking all necessary measures to prevent the situation from escalating. According to him, Turkish partners in Washington seem more confident than the Americans that Tehran will not escalate.
On July 31, the political leader of the terrorist group Hamas, Ismail Ghania, was killed by a missile strike in Tehran. After this, fears were expressed by some media outlets and Western officials that Iran could take revenge and attack Israel, which did not admit its involvement in the murder of the terrorist leader.
According to the Financial Times, the White House expects an attack by Iran or its allies on Israel as early as “this week,” based on the killing of leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah. Israeli intelligence also believes an attack could happen “in the coming days.”
