On October 21, 2024, US Special Envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Lebanon to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah with Lebanese officials. According to Reuters, the US will show support for Tel Aviv, although Hochstein is committed to ending the conflict despite the increasing number of casualties.
That night, Israel intensified its air attacks against the group's targets. The US reassured Lebanon that it would reduce the intensity of attacks on Beirut and its environs, but the IDF soon carried out a strike on the southern suburbs of the capital, even after the US stated that it denied large-scale attacks on the city.
As a result of the ongoing ground operation in Lebanon, Israel is seeking to clear the southern part of the country of militants and Hezbollah positions in order to restore peace in northern Israel and allow residents to return home.
So, Hochstein will continue to negotiate with Lebanese officials in search of peace despite Israel's ongoing military actions.
