US intelligence officials said on August 19, 2024, that Iran was responsible for hacking into the internal emails of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's team and attempted to hack into Kamali Harris' campaign servers.
“We are seeing increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during the election period, including influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting presidential campaigns,” the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a statement.
Iran's mission to the UN dismissed the allegations as “baseless and without foundation,” saying Iran had no motive or intention to interfere in the elections.
The FBI statement comes amid significant tensions between Washington and Tehran, as the U.S. looks to prevent or limit the threat of a retaliatory strike against Israel over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. A top Hezbollah commander was also killed in an Israeli strike last month.
On August 10, Donald Trump's campaign announced that its computers had been hacked, resulting in confidential materials being leaked.
The Trump campaign suggested that Iranian hackers were involved in the hack. The campaign did not provide specific evidence of Iran's involvement, but the statement came a day after Microsoft released a report detailing efforts by foreign agents to interfere in the 2024 U.S. election.
Microsoft said Iranian hackers and bots are actively targeting both presidential candidates to sow social unrest, chaos, and destabilize the American political system ahead of future elections.
During Trump's presidency, relations between the United States and Iran have become increasingly strained. Following the 2020 assassination of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Qassem Soleimani by the U.S. military, Tehran has vowed revenge on the United States.
On July 13, an assassination attempt was made on Trump. The former president was shot in Pennsylvania by 20-year-old local resident Thomas Matthew Crooks. He was shot by Secret Service officers, who protect top US officials. Trump suffered an ear injury.
After the assassination attempt, American media reported that Washington had received intelligence indicating an Iranian plot to kill Trump. CNN sources noted that there was no evidence that Crooks was involved in the possible plot. However, the motives of the shooter are still unknown.
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 2024.
