The US wants to control Lebanon to prevent the transfer of weapons from Syria. Israel is concerned about this situation

On November 19, 2024, Biden's special envoy to the Middle East, Amos Hochstein, arrived in Beirut. Iran advised Hezbollah to begin negotiations with Israel for a ceasefire following the Israeli attacks. The United States is interested in obtaining Lebanese consent to American security measures, including supervision of the port and airport in Beirut.

A ceasefire could come within days if resolution efforts are successful, otherwise the situation could escalate until mid-January. The Lebanese government is against the creation of an international security commission and demands that oversight remain in the hands of UNIFIL and the Lebanese army.

IDF forces have found Russian-made weapons in southern Lebanon, likely transported from Syria, including anti-tank missiles. Lebanon does not want to allow Israeli entry into its territory and opposes it.
