The Venice Film Festival awards ceremony on September 7 had a political tone: director Sarah Friedland, who won the competition with her film “A Familiar Touch,” expressed support for the Palestinian people and condemned Israel’s actions. She said: “I stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle for liberation.”

In her acceptance speech, Friedland emphasized her affiliation with the American Jewish community, saying, “I accept this award on the 336th day of Israel's genocide in Gaza and the 76th year of its occupation.” Filmmakers Kathleen Chalfant and Skandar Copti also expressed their support for the victims of the conflict, without mentioning the atrocities committed by Hamas.

Friedland's speech was met with applause and her words received widespread public support. The director and actress supported the Palestinians and called for the use of cinematic platforms to combat Israeli impunity on the world stage.
