The President of Serbia announced his readiness to buy out the share of Gazprom and Gazprom Neft in NIS if the United States imposes sanctions against the company. A US decision on sanctions against NIS, whose share belongs to Russian companies, is expected in the near future. If sanctions continue, Belgrade is ready to buy shares of Russian companies.
In an interview, the Serbian President clarified that they are expecting to receive an official document from the United States on sanctions. If necessary, Serbia is ready to buy out the company’s share at its own expense in order to prevent the transfer of Gazprom and Gazprom Neft shares to third parties. The President expressed his readiness to pay for the share of Russian companies and consider the possibility of maintaining sanctions.
NIS is the largest source of revenue for the Serbian state budget and is involved in the production and refining of oil and gas. The company owns an oil refinery and various gas fields. If the share of Russian companies is bought out, Serbia will be able to provide NIS with financial stability and maintain control over the assets.
