More than 50 thousand Hasidic pilgrims are expected to arrive in Uman to celebrate the Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashanah 5785 (2024).
This was reported by PR Director of the Rabbi Nachman International Charitable Foundation Anastasia Baryshnikova. She noted that pilgrims will begin arriving in Uman a month before the holiday, which this year 2024 is celebrated from October 2 to 4.
“They will start arriving from the beginning of September, as charitable organizations pay for the arrival of the poor. The rich will arrive a day or two before the holiday. New Year is late this year, in October, but the celebration will last two weeks,” said Anastasia Baryshnikova.
She also clarified that a visa regime will not be introduced for Hasidic pilgrims this year.
“It is known that visas will not be introduced for Jews. The Moldovan government will help with quick border crossing, since everyone will be coming from there,” she added.
Free toilets, a cafe and a mikvah are already being set up for pilgrims. A kitchen will be open on the synagogue grounds for anyone who wants to use it. The work is being financed by donations from Jews around the world.
“They also installed a clock on Turistov Street that chimes the time. It's interesting that everything is being built without laying a foundation, because you can't dig the ground there, because for Jews it's holy land,” Anastasia explained.
In 2023, the celebration of Rosh Hashanah was the most massive in the last three years, attracting about 40 thousand pilgrims. Hasidim from Israel, Europe and America arrived in Uman via Moldova. In 2024, according to Irina Rybnitskaya, director of the charitable foundation “Historical and Cultural Center of Uman,” more than 50 thousand Hasidim are expected to arrive:
“There is no data from travel agencies yet, so we can't say for sure. We assume that there will be more than 50 thousand, because last year there were 40 thousand,” said Irina Rybnitskaya.
An interdepartmental working committee was created in Uman to inspect buildings in the area of pilgrimage of the Bratslav Hasidim. This decision was made by order of the mayor of Uman, Irina Pletneva.
The commission included representatives of various bodies, including the executive bodies of the Uman City Council, the Uman District Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Cherkasy Oblast, the district police department, the Uman Municipal Guard communal enterprise, the Uman Department of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Cherkasy Oblast, as well as representatives of the Bratslav Hasidic community.
Earlier it was reported that the commission conducted a survey of buildings in the pilgrimage area for the presence of basic shelters and their condition. It was determined that underground and basement premises can be used as shelters for pilgrims. The owners of the facilities were given recommendations on equipping these shelters.
In addition, the head of the International Charitable Foundation named after Rabbi Nachman of Breslov held a working meeting with the Consul of Israel in Ukraine regarding the upcoming pilgrimage of Breslov Hasidim on Rosh Hashanah 5785, which is celebrated from October 2 to 4, 2024.
