Official Jerusalem is not reacting to what is happening.

The so-called Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, a certain Moskalkova, demanded that the UN “condemn the attack of Ukraine on the Kursk region” and “condemn terrorism on the part of Ukraine and take measures to prevent gross mass violations of human rights,” the hapless ombudsman wrote.

In response, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said it was “concerned” and asked Moscow for access to the Kursk region; Moscow pretended not to hear.

Russia was embarrassed to request a meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the Kursk region. This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.

Eleven days into the first invasion of Russia since World War II, Ukrainian troops control more than 1,100 square kilometers of the Kursk region, roughly the same amount of territory occupied by the Russian army since the start of the year. Despite this, none of the countries that Moscow calls “friendly” have expressed support for Putin.

The only exception is Syria, while China and Alexander Lukashenko have spoken out in general terms “for peace,” and the countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) are silent.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom Putin helped keep in power during the civil war, condemned the “aggression” that he said would not have happened without the “collective support of the West.” But Moscow’s main current ally, Beijing, broke its silence only on August 12, saying it had “called on all parties to adhere to three principles for cooling the situation.” China had voiced these principles since the war in Ukraine began, and has now repeated them in relation to the situation in the Kursk region.

Alexander Lukashenko, who in 2022 provided Putin with a springboard for his invasion of Ukraine, also called for negotiations, expressing the opinion that neither Russians nor Belarusians need a conflict. At the same time, he made it clear that he does not intend to help Russia or use nuclear weapons until “the enemy crosses the border of the Union State.”

The Collective Security Treaty Organization, which includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia, also did not condemn the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Although the CSTO has been touted as a structure in which Russia plays the role of the main defender of all member states, Moscow does not plan to ask for help. According to experts, asking for support from the CSTO would be a “second slap in the face” for Putin after Ukraine’s successful military operation in the Kursk region. The Kremlin prefers to keep silent about the events in the Kursk region, as do its allies, so as not to limit its room for maneuver.
