Zelensky’s Request for Missile Assistance
At a closed meeting within the framework of the UN General Assembly in New York, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to US President Donald Trump with a request to provide the Ukrainian armed forces with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles. This was reported by The Telegraph, citing several diplomatic sources.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, Zelensky emphasized that the deployment of missiles in Ukraine capable of reaching Moscow could push Putin to negotiate a peace agreement. The conversation between the presidents was characterized as positive, but it is currently unclear whether Trump agreed to the request.
US Reaction to the Missile Request
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed European partners that Trump has begun to change his tone regarding Ukraine, which can be seen as a positive signal. Sources add that the US president is experiencing strong dissatisfaction with Putin for ignoring attempts to end the conflict.
In an interview with Axios, Zelensky confirmed his request for new long-range weapons but did not specify which weapons were needed. He noted that if the means were obtained, Kyiv would be able to target Russian administrative facilities, such as the Kremlin. Zelensky also expressed solidarity with Trump on retaliatory measures against Russian attacks, including strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure and military factories.
Missile Range
Tomahawk missiles have a range of over 2,400 kilometers. For comparison, this is seven times more than the range of the ATACMS MLRS provided to Ukraine in 2024.
Zelensky’s Victory Plan
In the fall of 2024, Volodymyr Zelensky presented his so-called “victory plan” to allies in the US and Europe. Documents in the secret annex to the plan show that he requested Tomahawk missiles from the US. At that time, the US president was Joe Biden, who refused to provide the weapons, citing the risks of escalating the conflict.
