Washington previously banned arms sales to Saudi Arabia over its military action in Yemen. However, the administration of US President Joe Biden has decided to lift the ban on sales of American-made offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia. The US will lift the ban on certain types of air-to-ground munitions under new arms transfer rules. Sales could resume as early as next week, a senior Biden administration official announced.

Major international arms deals must be approved by Congress. U.S. lawmakers’ stance on arms sales to Saudi Arabia has changed following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and changes in Saudi Arabia’s military campaign in Yemen. The Saudi Defense Ministry has taken positive steps to mitigate the impact of the fighting, thanks to help from U.S. trainers.
