A hacker group linked to the Iranian military's intelligence unit attempted to hack into the WhatsApp accounts of Donald Trump and Joe Biden, Reuters reported.
Meta identified attempts to hack the WhatsApp accounts of US officials from the US presidential and former presidential administrations on August 23. The hacker group targeted was identified as Iranian.
The company suspended the accounts after users reported suspicious activity. In a release, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp called the hacking attempt a “small group of potential social engineers on WhatsApp” with accounts posing as support for AOL, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.
Meta blamed the hacking group APT42, which is linked to the Iranian military's intelligence unit. According to researchers, they install spyware on victims' mobile phones that allows them to listen in on calls, steal messages, and turn on cameras and microphones.
