In May 2024, Brazilian President Lula da Silva froze the implementation of a tender for the purchase of a batch of modern howitzers for the Brazilian army, which was won by the Israeli concern Elbit Maarahot. The president's foreign policy adviser Celso Amorim tried to get Elbit's victory cancelled and the order transferred to the Czech company Excalibur.
All the efforts of Celso Amorim did not lead to the desired result, as the Minister of Defense of Brazil José Músio and the high military command remain on the side of the Israeli company. In their opinion, continued cooperation with Elbit Maarahot is most beneficial for the Brazilian army.
The Brazilian army plans to buy 36 ATMOS self-propelled guns and a training simulator, with the deal valued at approximately $150-200 million. Despite pressure and attempts to reconsider the purchase decision, the contract with the Israeli company remains in force.
