1000 days of war: darkness of night and hope of dawn
November 19, 2024 marked 1,000 days since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This period became a test not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole world. The war destroyed millions of lives, but showed the incredible resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people.
“Every dark night, even if there are a thousand of them, always ends with dawn“- these words became a symbol of faith and hope for victory.
At an event at the Ukrainian Cultural Center at the Ukrainian Embassy in Israel A minute of silence was held in memory of the victims of the Russian armed invasion of Ukraine. In it took part Ambassador Yevgeny Korniychuk, embassy staff, representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora and their friends.
“We remember each and everyone who gave their lives for our country, and all whose lives were destroyed by this unjust war.
We remember. We are fighting. We will win.”
Zelensky: Russians are collectively responsible for this war, not just one crazy person from the Kremlin
President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky emphasized that “the blame for the war lies not only with the leadership of Russia, but also with its people”:
“Putin gave the order to start a war, his entourage is organizing the conduct of the war, but Russian aggression rests on the actions and connivance of many Russians. Putin created the conditions for murder, but it is the Russians who are launching missiles and drones, storming our Ukrainian positions, torturing our prisoners and providing the war machine, not just one crazy person in the Kremlin“- Zelensky said during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on November 19, 2024.
The President emphasized that responsibility for this war must be collective, since “what they are doing cannot be attributed only to the power of state repression or propaganda.”
Zelensky also noted that no propaganda and repression can justify the tacit consent of Russians.
Zelensky published a video with the events that took place in Ukraine since the beginning of a full-scale war, and signed it “1000 days together. 1000 days of Ukraine”.
Israel and Ukraine
“1000 days of war in Ukraine brought great suffering and loss. Israel firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” — Israeli Foreign Ministry published November 19, 2024 words of support to the Ukrainian people.
On the eve of the 1000th day of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the Ukrainian people with words of support.
“Shalom, dear friends from Jerusalem. 1000 days have already passed since the beginning (full-scale – ed) war in Ukraine, and we also pause to reflect on the enormous scale of human suffering that this war has brought.
As a country that knows the pain of war, we in Israel want to say to our friends in Ukraine: you are not alone!
We feel your pain. We feel your suffering. And we continue to mourn with you your enormous losses. So many people have lost their lives, their livelihoods, their homes, their loved ones, their basic sense of security for themselves and their children. And it's deeply, deeply painful.
We are grateful to be among countries that can offer resources and provide humanitarian, medical and psychological support – which reflect the goodwill and compassion of the Israeli people. The State of Israel continues to support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and continues to strive to stop the senseless (? – ed) suffering and loss.
I sincerely hope that diplomacy (? -ed) and goodwill (? -ed) will prevail and that the path to settlement and peace in Ukraine will be quickly found.”

The beginning of the war: Russia's plans and unexpected resistance
Three years of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine have become a time of testing, change and global shifts. In February 2022, Western countries assumed that Ukraine would fall to the Russian army in a matter of days. Worldwide airlines grounded their flights and Western embassies were hastily evacuated. Kyiv, however, not only withstood the attack, but also became a symbol of invincible resistance.
By the spring of 2022, Ukrainian defenders liberated the Kiev region and the northern regions, causing shock among the allies, who underestimated the ability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to resist the Russian army. Later, in November 2022, Ukraine showed the results of a successful counter-offensive, returning the Kharkov region and the right bank of the Kherson region, which convinced the West of the need to supply modern weapons such as HIMARS and Patriot.
However, Ukraine's successes have also exposed tensions between Kiev and Washington. The American administration, along with Europe, has at times taken a cautious position, fearing the Kremlin’s blackmail with threats of a nuclear strike. This limited aid and intensified the war of attrition, allowing Russia to attract help from Iran, China and North Korea.
Today, 1,000 days later, the war has become globalized, and its outcome depends on the political decisions of world leaders. The question of the further American course, especially after the possible return of Donald Trump to the White House, will become a key factor for Ukraine and international security.
Mistakes of the West: what Ukraine lacked
The first months of the war revealed the West's indecisiveness. World leaders feared provocations from the Kremlin and restrictions on the supply of modern weapons.
Western countries, fearing escalation, did not provide Ukraine with long-range missiles and tanks, which slowed down the liberation of the occupied territories.
Globalization of war: new threats
Russia has found support in Iran, China and North Korea. These countries provide weapons, technology and even soldiers for the war.
At the same time, the policy of “war of attrition” led to a crisis within Russia itself. Economic sanctions, international isolation and the decline in morale of Russian soldiers played their role.
Hope for Dawn
Despite all the trials, Ukrainians believe in victory. The country survived thanks to the resilience of the people, the support of the allies and the heroism of the army.
“We remember. We are fighting. We will win“- this phrase sounds not only in Ukraine, but also beyond its borders.
Conclusion
1000 days of war became a test for every Ukrainian. This war showed that even in the darkest times it is possible to maintain faith in the future.
“Every dark night ends with dawn. And this dawn will be ours”said Vladimir Zelensky, and his words reflect the desire for freedom that unites millions of people.
