President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan protested against the United States’ decision to cancel visas for Palestinian officials and ban them from participating in the meeting of world leaders at the United Nations, scheduled for this month in New York.

Last week, Washington announced that it would not allow the head of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas and other officials into New York, while several US allies are preparing to recognize Palestine as a state, according to Reuters.

Erdogan emphasized that such a move “contradicts the very essence of the United Nations’ existence.” He added that this decision requires immediate reconsideration.

“The UN General Assembly exists to discuss world problems and find solutions. The absence of the Palestinian delegation at the General Assembly will only play into Israel’s hands,” noted the President of Turkey.

There is also information that Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot stated that the country will join a number of states ready to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly and then impose sanctions against Israel in the context of the Gaza conflict. This position aligns with the views of France and the United Kingdom, which are also inclined to recognize Palestine under certain conditions. To date, 146 states have recognized the Palestinian state, including Ukraine.
