Iran may back down from launching a large-scale attack on Israel, but the US is still waiting for Tehran's response to the killing of the Hamas leader, Politico reports.

In recent days, the Biden administration has used diplomatic channels to engage its allies in the Middle East to lobby Tehran to reconsider its decision to attack Israel.

Two senior US officials said they had warned Iran that a massive attack would only make matters worse and could lead to a direct clash between the countries.

The administration also called on Iran to reconsider its response to the blast that killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh's death was likely the result of a remote-controlled bomb planted in his Tehran guesthouse as part of a covert operation, rather than part of a larger attack.
Now, according to Politico's sources, Tehran is increasingly in line with Washington's position, although it initially denied it.

US officials have sent a message through intermediaries to Tehran to reconsider plans to launch a war against Israel if the explosion that killed Haniyeh was the result of a covert Israeli operation and did not kill any Iranian citizens.

Officials are expecting some kind of reaction from Iran to Haniyeh's killing, but Tehran appears to have changed its position and the US does not expect an imminent attack on Israel.
