According to the information published on the COL portal, on September 1 in Ukraine, despite the ongoing war and constant missile attacks, the new school year began in the “Or Avner” school network, belonging to the Chabad movement.
In Zaporizhzhia, the ceremonial opening of the school year was interrupted by an air raid alert. Representatives of educational institutions emphasize that under current conditions, Jewish schools become the most important support for preserving community life and educating the younger generation.
The beginning of the school year coincides with a difficult economic situation. In an effort to support the families of first-graders, the community organized the distribution of school backpacks. Educational institutions updated safety instructions in advance so that teachers and students are prepared for possible attacks.
In parallel with this, preparations for Jewish holidays continue amid constant attacks. In Kyiv, ritual slaughter of poultry and livestock has begun to provide communities with food for the holidays. The Chabad humanitarian organization JRNU is preparing to distribute tens of thousands of holiday kits, which include honey, baked goods, calendars, and materials about traditions. It is also planned to distribute essential food kits for families across the country.
Rabbi Simcha Levengart from Kyiv noted that “honey symbolizes a sweet new year, and in the conditions of war, this sign takes on special significance.” According to him, despite the destruction and constant fear, more and more people from the Jewish community come for support, finding their spiritual home there.
