Historical Facts About Biblical Characters

The topics of the historical accuracy of the Bible have inspired researchers and the public for centuries. Recently, studies have shown that many biblical figures were real people who existed in the ancient Near East.

Archaeological findings help connect names recorded in biblical texts with historical records. This data has been preserved on inscriptions, seals, and tablets, reports Arkeonews.

The Work of Lawrence Mykytiuk

Lawrence Mykytiuk, an honorary professor at Purdue University, has dedicated decades to studying such connections. Despite lacking an archaeological background, he calls himself a “counter,” meticulously checking inscriptions to determine if they correspond to the figures mentioned in the Bible.

“I analyze inscriptions to understand if they relate to biblical figures and establish an account for confident identification,” Mykytiuk believes.

Starting his work in the 1990s, he created a catalog of rulers, priests, and officials whose existence is confirmed by both the texts of the Holy Scriptures and archaeology.

Known Confirmed Figures

One of the striking examples is King David, who was previously considered a mythical figure. Three inscriptions dated to the 9th century BC played a role in recording the existence of a dynasty associated with the biblical narrative. Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II, known for the destruction of Jerusalem, is also clearly identified, confirmed by cuneiform records.

In addition to the aforementioned, other historical figures have been confirmed, such as Pharaoh Sheshonq I, King Hezekiah of Judah, Cyrus the Great, and Belshazzar of Babylon. All of them are included in a growing list of 53 historical names from various parts of the ancient world, including Egypt, Judah, and Babylon.

Strict Verification Criteria

To minimize forgeries, Mykytiuk applies strict criteria. Each name must match characteristics such as title, origin, historical period, and geography before it can be accepted. This approach ensures that identification is based not only on coincidence.

The methodology has allowed for the confirmation of the existence of both well-known historical figures, such as Xerxes I, and lesser-known ones, like Jehucal, mentioned in the book of Jeremiah. Although data on the image of David has not yet been fully developed, records from the 1st millennium BC provide compelling evidence for the existence of a number of figures from the Bible.

Significance for Science and Religion

These results are significant not only for the interpretation of biblical texts but also for historical research. For believers, this serves as confirmation of the connection between religious traditions and archaeological findings. Scientists, in turn, see this as a demonstration of the high historical accuracy of the Bible, starting from the time of David.

Mykytiuk emphasizes that his research concerns not theology but exclusively history. “Based on masses of concrete evidence, I see no reason to doubt the historical accuracy of the Bible,” he asserts.
