Slovakia's president breaks ground and aims to strengthen ties with Russia as he meets Putin in Moscow

Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico arrived in Moscow, as reported by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov. On the evening of December 22, Fico has a private meeting with Russian President Putin. This is the third meeting between the leader of an EU member state and the Russian president since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Fico became the third EU prime minister to visit Moscow since the conflict began. His pro-Russian policies are often discussed in Western media. During the election campaign, Fico spoke out against military aid for Ukraine, but after coming to power he changed his mind and supported Zelensky’s “peace formula.”

Slovakia continues to purchase gas from Russia, despite tense relations between Moscow and Kyiv. Fico threatened Ukraine with a serious conflict if it stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory after the end of the current contract on December 31.
