Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas “expressed the opinion” that the liquidation of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is aimed at prolonging the conflict in Gaza and complicating negotiations to resolve the crisis. He called the event in the Russian “RIO News“a cowardly act and dangerous for Israeli politics.”
“There is no doubt that the assassination of Mr. Haniyeh is aimed at prolonging the war and expanding its scope. It will have a negative impact on the ongoing negotiations to end the aggression and withdraw Israeli troops from Gaza, but we call on our people to be resilient, united and patient in the face of this occupation,” Abbas said.
Abbas called on the Israeli authorities to renounce “aggressive actions against the Palestinian people, to comply with international law and to implement the Arab Peace Initiative.” He also demanded an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip.
The president of the PA said that Gaza should be handed over to the government in Ramallah and that Israel's temporary plans to control the enclave were unacceptable. Abbas expressed strong opposition to such initiatives and stressed the need to govern Gaza through the PLO and the legitimate Palestinian government.
He also said he plans to discuss the “peace process” with President Putin during his upcoming visit to Russia.
“We highly value Russia's role in the Quartet of international mediators and in the UN Security Council, as well as its position in support of achieving peace in accordance with the international legal framework. We also highly value Russia's contribution to the inter-Palestinian dialogue and the rapprochement of the positions of the Palestinian factions,” the head of the PNA said.
